There is a famous not-actually-roguelike roguelike, called Pixel Dungeon, a mobile game that has at least a dozen clones on the Playstore. Sure it has a lot of randomness, but you also get to repeat that randomness as much as you want. I play Angband like it was my second job, and you're always a step away from death, but you're given plenty of information and it's a game of choice. more than a reasonable amount, of roguelike. You can go back to square 1 on a roguelike as much as you want, stock up on as many potions of healing as you can carry, be as careful as you want, run from every monster, and the game never pressures you forward.

Roguelike games set out to disprove that - or at least to give you a real challenge. See, one of the main draws of roguelike games is that, every good P&P RPG player will tell you that they can beat ANY monster, situation, or challenge given enough time and preparation. Roguelike games are methodical, slow RPGs where the difficulty is ramped up but there is no 'action' factor. I think the most common term is 'bullet hell'. That is the primary aspect of the gameplay, to which they have added some improvements. Still, my main argument is that you can beat the game by dodging the bad bullets that want to kill you.
